History

Cemetery grounds at Gracelawn Memorial ParkThe current site of Gracelawn Memorial Park was for many years widely known as "Old Logan Farm," with a commanding position south of the city in the wide expanse of farms and horse boarding ranches in the early years of Wilmington (1800s through the 1920 and 30s).

In 1931, Logan Farm became Buck Airport when it was leased to J. Allison Buck, who had the fields plowed and smoothed to become dirt runways for the bi-planes and new single wing planes that were being developed. Many promotional events took place at the airport—from free rides to flying lessons—including a Zeppelin landing to promote a shoe store. Tragically on July 17, 1933, J. Allison Buck lost his life in an aircraft he was testing.

Soon thereafter, the lease for the airport gave way to the incorporation of Gracelawn Memorial Park on October 26, 1934 in a public ceremony hosted by the president of the memorial park, W. L. Richards.

Memorial Tree

One of the noted features of Gracelawn Memorial Park is the Memorial Tree, a bronze sculpture dedicated to those who are buried at our cemetery. The tree greets you as you enter the administrative building and remains one of our more prominent focal points. Leaves on the tree can be purchased and engraved with loved ones' names. More than 30 years ago, the Memorial Tree was unveiled, and all the leaves were promptly claimed. To keep up with interest in this thoughtful tribute, we've added more.
